SpekWork’s podcast art/work/play

SpekWork is a studio exploring new political narratives through game design. SpekWork is a collaborative effort of Cat Bluemke, Ben McCarthy, and Jonathan Carroll, post-secondary instructors teaching from the intersections of art, labour, and emerging technologies. SpekWork develops games as immersive critical commentary, taking fundamental research in perception to be the foundation of emergent ideology. Their work has been exhibited internationally at venues such as at venues such as Kunsternes Hus (Norway), the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale, and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago).

Tough Guy Mountain is a Toronto-based art collective making interactive performance art about unpaid internships. Working together since 2012, they have created video games, musical theatre, and gallery exhibits in which audiences explore a fantasy world of corporate serfdom. The collective has exhibited their work and performed across Canada and the United States.

Episode 5

In this episode, I talk with Afrofuturist Quentin VerCetty about making techno-fossils and augmented reality monuments that mark the presence of Black people across the Canadian landscape as well as space and time.

Quentin Vercetty - www.vercetty.com

Quentin on Instagram - @keepgrowingq

Currently based in Quebec, Canada, Quentin VerCetty is an award winning visual storyteller, art educator and graduate of OCAD University. His work uses speculative narratives like Afrofuturism to address issues of representation, immigration, decolonization, and the lack of (what he calls) PDAA (Public display of Appreciation for Africa(ns). Quentin has featured work on every continent in places like Mexico, Haiti, Peru, Australia, United Arab Empire and Germany to name a few. His passion for artivism, using art as a tool for social change, lead to starting the Canadian chapter of the Black Speculative Arts Movement (BSAMCanada) in Toronto, 2016 and has since then continue to spread it across the nation. Through his work he hopes to engage minds and inspire hearts to help to make the world a better place not only for today but for many tomorrows to come.

Episode 3

In this episode I talk with performance, video and cosplay artist Maya Ben David about anthropomorphic airplanes, the many subcultures of fandom, and how content licensing prices artists out of production.

mayabendavid.net

Youtube channel - Maya Ben David

Maya Ben David (MBD) is a Toronto-based Jewish-Iranian Anthropomorphic Airplane. Working in video, installation and performance, she creates worlds and characters that aid her ongoing exploration of anthropomorphism, cosplay and performative personas. Ben David presents the origin stories of her characters in the form of video and performance, and expands on them via her online presence. They often inhabit alternate universes accompanied by nostalgia, such as the worlds of Pokémon and Spiderman. In addition, Ben David also plays a character called MBD who is known for having multiple feuds with her many alter egos as well as the art world. Most infamously, MBD has ignited online feuds with artists such as Jon Rafman and Ajay Kurian.

Next step in changing tradition.
